Add a patient to the waitlist
When a patient wants a sooner time than what is open, add them to the waitlist with their desired treatment and rough availability instead of forcing a far-off booking.
Fill an opening
When a cancellation creates a gap, work the waitlist for a matching patient and book them into the freed slot. The original cancelled appointment should be marked cancelled (not deleted) so the slot reopens and reporting stays accurate.

You confirm the patient before booking them in, so the right person gets the slot. Reminders for the new booking then send as usual.
